Coach Bret Bielema's first season as Illinois' head coach in 2021 featured a pair of marquee wins: at No. 7 Penn State, in the longest game in college football history (9 overtimes) and at No. 20 Minnesota. The roster featured all-star players in defensive backs Kerby Joseph, Devon Witherspoon and Sydney Brown, defensive linemen Johnny Newton and Keith Randolph, offensive linemen Doug Kramer, Vederian Lowe and Alex Palczewski, running back Chase Brown, punter Blake Hayes, and placekicker James McCourt.
