"Buck" Leonard signed Gold Hall of Fame Plaque postcard
Beautiful autograph from a 1972 Baseball Hall of Famer.
As of May 29, 2024, when Negro League statistics were integrated into Major League Baseball's stats, Buck Leonard now ranks eighth all-time with a .345 average.
Walter Fenner "Buck" Leonard(Sept. 8, 1907 – Nov. 27, 1997) was ranked number 47 on the 100 Greatest Baseball Players list by The Sporting News in 1999. Playing first base for the Homestead Grays between 1934 and 1950, the Grays were considered one of the best teams in Negro League baseball. Leonard never played in Major League Baseball, declining a 1952 MLB contract because he felt he was too old. He and fellow Negro League star Josh Gibson were elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

AUTHENTICATION - About 50 years ago, when I first began collecting sports memorabilia, I discovered Jack Smalling's very first baseball autograph collectors handbook (the original was mimeographed--I still have it). Nearly every day, as a high school teenager, I would check off five-to-ten names on my list. I'd write each player (mostly retired players) a brief customized letter, enclose five 3x5 index cards or sometimes a Sporting News clipping, and also--most importantly--a self-addressed stamped envelope (stamps were a nickel in those days). Nearly every day, I would receive four or five prizes in the mailbox, sometimes with five signed cards, sometimes with just one. One out of twenty would even enclose a HOF Plaque card or a small autographed photo. I'd estimate that my percentage of success was somewhere between fifty and sixty percent. The item you're considering here was one of those items. Over the years, I've sold a bunch via EBAY (I have a perfect feedback record: https://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=coolstuffsports ) and a bunch to sports memorabilia shops.
